Match Notes

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will host yet another Top 10 team when No. 2 Pepperdine makes its way to the Stan Sheriff Center for a two-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series, Friday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 27. Match times are 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

The Warriors (1-6, 0-4 MPSF) are in search of their first MPSF victory following a two-match sweep by No. 9 Long Beach State last week in Long Beach, Calif. UH dropped its fourth road match of the season but not without controversy as a phantom no-call on match point would have given UH a five-set win in the series opener. The Beach swept the Warriors in the rematch.

Thus far, all seven matches UH has played were against Top 10 teams, including a season-opening series with then-No. 2 BYU. The team's only win was against then-No. 5 UCLA in the Outrigger Invitational.

Pepperdine (3-1, 3-1) moved up two spots in this week's AVCA poll to No. 2 after winning both matches last week at home – a straight set win over Pacific and four-set victory over then-No. 2 Stanford. Against the Cardinal, Maurice Torres had a match-high 20 kills while Kyle Gerrans had 11 kills with no errors in 21 attempts. For the year, Torres leads the Waves with a 3.92 kill average while Josh Taylor, a Punahou School graduate, is averaging 2.85 kills and 1.38 digs per set. As a team, Pepperdine is hitting a league-best .369.
