HONOLULU – For the second straight night, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team came so close to winning its first match of the season only to fall in five to seventh-ranked Penn State, Friday on the second day of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 24-26, 25-18, 17-25, 25-15, 16-14.
The Warriors (0-4) led two sets to none and even had match point in the fifth but could not put away the Nittany Lions (1-1), who have an outside shot of capturing their third tournament title.
Down 2-1, Penn State rallied for a 25-15 win in the fourth and overcame two big service aces by UH's
Brook Sedore that gave the Warriors match point at 14-13. After a Sedore service ace and
JP Marks hitting error, the Nittany Lions closed out the match with Tom Comfort's 15
th kill.
Freshman
Sinisa Zarkovic led the Warriors with a match-high 18 kills while hitting .500. He also had one service ace, seven digs, and two blocks. Marks added 16 kills for UH, who dropped its sixth consecutive match to the Nittany Lions in the tournament and third straight five-setter.
Aaron Russell had a team-high 17 kills for Penn State while his brother Peter added 11 and three blocks.
The Warriors rallied from an 17-14 deficit in Set 1 and took a 22-20 lead following three straight Nittany Lion hitting errors. At set point at 24-22, Marks followed through hitting the cable on his potential game-winning kill. PSU rallied to tie it at 24 but the Warriors closed out the set with a Zarkovic kill and an Aaron Russell hitting error.
The Nittany Lions took a 14-10 lead in Set 2 after UH led 7-4 early on. PSU extended its lead to 21-15 en route to a 25-19 win. But the Warriors responded, jumping all over the Nittany Lions in the third set with eight kills in their first 10 swings. During a mini four-point swing, UH extended its lead to an insurmountable 14-6 advantage and coasted to a 25-17 victory.
In the fourth set, the Lions used an 8-2 run – spurred by five UH hitting errors – for a commanding 16-8 lead and with it the momentum to close out the match.
In the first match of the day, fifth-ranked UCLA improved to 2-0 in the tourney with a come-from-behind 17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13 victory over No. 10 Ohio State. Dane Worley had a match-high 19 kills for the Bruins, who extended their streak by playing their sixth five-set match of 2013. Michael Henchy had a team-high 16 kills on .536 hitting.
The tournament concludes on Saturday with Ohio State and Penn State at 4:00 p.m. followed by UH and UCLA at 7:00 p.m.
