DAVIS, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team finished a difficult road trip with a 6-3 loss to UC Davis on Monday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium. The game was a non-conference contest for both teams, as the Rainbows drop to 28-22 while the Aggies improve to 21-27.
Kyle Dowdy earned his second career start but received the loss to fall to 2-3. He pitched two innings surrendering three runs on four hits. Evan Wolf (2-4) got the win for UC Davis, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work.
Zack Swasey batted 2-4 with one RBI for the 'Bows, who close the regular season hosting Nevada for three games. Collin Bennett had one hit, one run, and one RBI, and Stephen Ventimilia and Pi'ikea Kitamura both added one hit and one run.
The Rainbows, looking for their first win of the trip, struck first with a run in the first inning. Kitamura scored from third base on a wild pitch by Wolf after reaching base with a single earlier in the inning.
The Aggies quickly answered in the bottom of the first inning by scoring two runs off a pair of doubles by David Popkins and Paul Politi. Popkins batted 2-5 with two runs and Politi added two hits and two RBI.
UC Davis pushed the lead to 4-1 after scoring runs on the second and third inning, but UH clawed back in the game to cut the lead to 4-3. Bennett doubled to open the sixth inning and was then driven home on a Swasey base hit. Bennett then brought another run home one inning later on an infield ground out to make it a one-run game.
The Aggies responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to regain the momentum and pace to the win.
Hawai'i and Nevada open their series on Thursday, May 17, at 6:35 p.m., at Les Murakami Stadium.
