Men’s Volleyball Concludes Season With Loss

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team concluded the 2012 season with a four-set loss to UC Santa Barbara, Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Thunderdome. Set scores were 20-25, 25-20, 25-13, and 25-21.
 
The 14th-ranked Warriors (7-20, 4-18 MPSF) dropped both matches to the Gauchos and finished the season by losing their last eight matches and 15 of their final 16 contests. UH will not qualify for the eight-team MPSF Tournament, which begins in two weeks.
 
Playing in his final match for the Warriors was senior outside hitter Steven Hunt, who led the team with 14 kills and completed his four-year career with 1,076 kills. Senior libero Nick Castello had three digs in his final match while senior middle blocker Jarrrod Lofy added three kills and three blocks.
 
Sophomore Scott Hartley saw his most extensive playing time of his career. Making his second straight start, the Encinitas, Calif., native finished with eight kills and one service ace.
 
The Gauchos (7-15, 5-15) used its size advantage to record 17.5 team blocks, led by Dylan Davis' 12 total blocks. Miles Evans led the UCSB offense with 21 kills on .400 hitting.
 
In the first set, UH used a 5-1 run to turn a one-point lead to a 21-16 cushion and a 25-20 victory. The Gauchos won the final three points of Set 2 to even the match at one set a piece and jumped all over the Warriors in Set 3, 12-4, en route to a 25-13 win. UH hung tough in Set 4, tying the score at 16 before faltering late as Harrison Carroll was blocked on match point.
 
Hawai'i finished the season with 20 losses for the first time in school history.
