SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team struggled offensively in a straight-set loss to UC Santa Barbara, Friday, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Thunderdome. Set scores were 25-21, 25-13, 28-26.
The 14
th-ranked Warriors (7-19, 4-17 MPSF) struggled to get anything going in the match as they hit .000 as a team with 28 kills and 28 errors. In the second set, UH had only five kills with 10 errors.
Senior outside hitter
Steven Hunt was the only Warrior to reach double-figures with 10 kills to along with five blocks. Middle blocker
Nick West added five kills and a team-high seven blocks.
The Gauchos (6-17, 4-15) snapped their eight-match losing streak and moved ahead of the Warriors in the MPSF standings into 11
th place. UCSB was led by Miles Evans and Kevin Donohue, who each tallied 11 kills. Donohue also had three of the teams' six aces.
After falling behind two sets to none, the Warriors made one last threat in Set 3, rallying from a 14-7 deficit. UH tied it at 23 after consecutive blocks by
Brook Sedore and even held set point at 26-25 after West and
Harrison Carroll teamed up for a double-block. But the Gauchos closed out the match with three straight points including a block on Carroll on match point.
UH has now lost 14 of its last 15 matches. The Warriors conclude the regular season with a rematch against UCSB, Saturday, at 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT).
