HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai`i women's sand volleyball team wrapped up day one of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge with a 1-3 record in dual match competitions.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-5) posted its lone win against Loyola Marymount (3-2) in the day's finale. UH suffered losses in its first three matches against USC (4-1), Long Beach State (3-2) and Pepperdine (5-0) on a chilly day in which winds reached up to 25 mph.
Pepperdine went a perfect 4-0 on the day, Long Beach State was 3-1, USC tallied a 2-2 mark and Loyola Marymount dropped all four of its matches.
Top flight pair
Jane Croson and
Ashley Lee went just 1-3 in their matchups on the day, while
Emily Hartong and
Elizabeth Stoltzman went 2-2 in their match-ups, including a sweep of LMU's Betsi Metter and Litera Kiel at the No. 1 flight in UH's 3-2 win.
Competition will continue on Sunday with a flighted pairs championship consisting of gold and silver divisions (the top 16 teams will compete in the gold division). Pairs will get ranking points based on their finish that will also help them qualify for the pairs competitions of the AVCA Championships. Competition begins at 9 a.m. PT.
