STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball had enough of losing and rallied for a four-set victory over No. 3 Stanford in the second of two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches at Maples Pavilion. Set scores were 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23.
The 14
th-ranked Warriors (7-12, 4-10 MPSF) snapped a seven-match losing streak and avoided setting a new school losing streak record. UH also won for the first time in Stanford in seven meetings dating back to 2008. The match was Hawai'i's only win during its four-match match road trip.
Steven Hunt led the Warriors with a match-high 22 kills on .298 hitting, along with six digs and four blocks.
JP Marks set a new career-high of 18 kills on .419 hitting, while
Harrison Carroll came off the bench and added nine kills and five digs.
Brian Cook led the Cardinal (14-5, 11-4) with 18 kills while Brad Lawson added 17.
After dropped the first set, the Warriors came storming back taking the next two sets 25-22 and 25-20. In Set 2, UH rallied from a 20-18 deficit and scored five of the final six points to close out the game, including a big block by
Nick West and
Taylor Averill on Irvin for the game winner.
The Warriors grabbed a one set advantage by pulling away late in Set 3. At 20-all, UH scored the final five points. Kills by Marks and Averill and a pair of Cardinal hitting errors set up Hunt's ace to close out the set.
The teams traded leads in Set 4 until the Warriors reached 20 first and led 21-19 after a Marks' kill and block on consecutive plays. The Cardinal tied it at 21 but the Warriors responded with back-to-back kills by West and Marks. After a Lawson kill and Cardinal block, West gave UH match point and a big triple block on Lawson ended the match.
UH returns to Honolulu to host Brigham Young in a two-match MPSF series, March 16-17 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
