HONOLULU – Freshman pitcher
Scott Squier dominated a potent Wichita State lineup, as the University of Hawai'i baseball team shutout the Shockers, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. The two teams retake the field on Sunday when the Rainbows will look to complete the series sweep.
Squier (2-1) was nearly unhittable, tossing eight shutout innings while allowing just three hits and a season-high seven strikeouts. He retired the final seven batters he faced before
Jesse Moore pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Albert Minnis (1-1) was tagged with the loss in six innings of work. He surrendered four runs on seven hits before leaving the game in the seventh inning.
The 'Bows scored all four of their runs in the third inning which proved to be more than enough for Squier. With the bases loaded,
Collin Bennett (2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI) drove a Minnis pitch through the left side of the infield which was mishandled by leftfielder Garrett Bayliff.
Stephen Ventimilia (1 H, 1 R) and
Cody Clark scored on the play.
Max Duval (1 H, 2 RBI) capped the big inning with a two-RBI double.
WSU did see some daylight in the top of the third inning. Tyler Baker (1-2) singled then stole second, but
Breland Almadova's ( 1 H, 1 R) diving catch in centerfield and a Squier strikeout ended the scoring the threat.
UH missed a golden opportunity to put the game away in the seventh inning. The 'Bows had the bases loaded with no outs, but came up empty after a pair of pop ups and a Duval strikeout.
UH will be looking to win its eighth straight game when the teams meet on Sunday for their series finale. Start time is set for 12:05 p.m.
