HONOLULU – The No. 17 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team hosts its final home match of the season when it takes on top-ranked UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up on Saturday, March 31. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
This is the third and final home match for the Rainbow Wahine (10-17, 0-5 MPSF) who have played virtually their entire schedule—including 15 of its last 17 regular-season matches—on the mainland. Seniors
Maile Osborne and
Sivan Pardon will make their final home appearance on Saturday and will be honored as part of senior night festivities.
Jack in the Box is the match sponsor on Saturday and will award a free taco coupon each time UH scores a goal. UH sports marketing staff will be in the stands registering fans for the promotion. The team's two departing seniors will receive plaques after the match courtesy of the University of Hawai'i Federal Credit Union.
Following a disappointing 8-5 home loss to No. 9 San Jose State this past Saturday, the Rainbow Wahine are still in search of their first conference win of the year. UH now faces the challenge of playing a Bruin (15-1, 4-0 MPSF) squad that has won nine straight matches. The team's lone loss came on all the way back on Feb. 5 at Stanford.
UH met the Bruins that same weekend during the Stanford Invitational and nearly pulled off the upset, leading 5-4 going into the final quarter. UCLA, however, scored the final two goals of the match to escape with the victory.
Amarens Genee currently leads the team in goals, with 36, and is among the MPSF leaders in goals per game. The junior looks to rebound following the San Jose State loss, a rare match in which she went scoreless. UH goalkeeper
Serena Reid tallied 13 saves in the last match and is averaging close to eight saves a match this year.
Following its match vs. UCLA, the team will play its reamining four regular-season matches on the road, inlcuding its MPSF finale at Arizona State on Apri 14. The MPSF Championships will be held April 27-29 at Stanford.
