NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball dropped a pivotal four-set Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match to No. 14 Cal State Northridge, 25-12, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, Friday at The Matadome.
The 12
th-ranked Warriors (7-15, 4-13 MPSF) lost for the 10
th time in their last 11 matches. More importantly, the Matadors (9-13, 5-10) moved one win ahead of UH in the win column as the teams battle for a spot in the MPSF Tournament.
Senior outside hitter
Steven Hunt had a team-high 11 kills but committed 10 errors in 33 swings. Freshman outside hitter
JP Marks added 10 kills while freshman opposite
Taylor Averill had nine kills.
As a team, Hawai'i hit .198 compared to CSUN's .390. Julius Hoefer hit for a career-high 27 kills at a .422 clip while Brandon Lebrok added 15 kills on .414 hitting.
After getting thumped in the first set, the Warriors rebounded and evened the match with a 25-21 victory in Set 2 in which UH hit .344. But the Matadors turned it up a notch in the latter part of the final two sets, including scoring the final four points to end the match.
The teams play again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. HT). The match can be seen online at espn3.com.
