Women's Hoops Concludes WAC Season With Pivotal Game at Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team concludes their final regular season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference at Idaho this Saturday afternoon. It will be a crucial fight for seeding between Hawai'i, Idaho and San Jose State for fourth place in next week's WAC Tournament. UH and SJSU are tied at 6-7 in conference action while Idaho is right below the 'Bows and Spartans at 5-8. 

The Rainbow Wahine are looking to rebound after an 85-64 loss at Utah State on Thursday night. Three Rainbow Wahine scored in double-figures against the Aggies led by senior Breanna Arbuckle's 18 points while Kamilah Jackson posted her 15th double-double of the season with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Arbuckle was 7-for-12 from the loor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. She added three rebounds with two assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Jackson came through with a yeoman performance coming off the bench after being out ill the last couple of days. Jackson was an efficient 7-for-11 in field goals with one 3-pointer and 2-of-3 from the charity stripe. Vicky Tagalicod added 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting with a trey. She chipped in with four rebounds, an assist and a steal while Sydney Haydel dished out a team-high five assists.

Jackson leads UH and is No. 9 amonst WAC players overall with 13.2 points per game and is tops in the league with 10.5 rebounds per game. Her rebounding average is ranked at No. 15 in the NCAA DI and she is No. 10 with 15 double-doubles this season. She is No. 10 in the WAC witha .394 free throw percentage from sinking 136-of-196 shots from the charity stripe. Jackson has also raised her all around game this season posting career season highs with 54 assists, 18 blocks and 23 steals.

Senior Breanna Arbuckles has closed out the regular season on a scoring tear, posting double-figures in six of the last seven games. She is averaging a career-high 10.1 points per game and has moved up in the UH career record books to No. 3 in blocked shots (144),  No. 4 in free throw attempts (504), No. 5 with 426 defensive rebounds, No. 7 in minutes played (2,886), and No. 10 in free throws made with 267.

The WAC Tournament scenario for the 'Bows is as follows. If Hawai'i defeats Idaho and Utah State beats San Jose State, then UH will be No. 4. If UH gets a win over Idaho and SJSU defeats the Aggies in Logan, UH will be No. 5. If UH loses to Idaho the 'Bows will be seeded No. 6.

Scouting the Vandals...
Idaho comes into the WAC regular season finale one game back of both Hawai'i and San Jose State at 5-8. The Vandals are led by Alyssa Charlston, who is averaging a team-high 14.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Charlston a sophomore utility player of sorts on the court also has team-highs with 87 free throws made, 134 free throw attempts, and 157 field goals made. Keep your eyes open for freshman guard Krissy Karr who is ranked third in the WAC with 103 assists (3.96 per game) and another freshman guard from Australia, Stacey Barr, who although has only started four games, leads the Vandals and is ranked No. 4 in the WAC with 52 made 3-pointers.

Coaches: Dana Takahara-Dias is in her third year at UH (32-56). Jon Newley is in his fourth year at Idaho with a 48-70 record with the Vandals. Overall he is 176-183 in 10 seasons.
Series record: Hawai'i holds a 10-5 lead over Idaho. Last season, UH and Idaho split their games with both home teams winning. In Moscow, the Vandals won 72-48, but at home, the 'Bows won, 72-60. Hawai'i is  7-2 at home and 3-3 away against Idaho. Earlier this year, the 'Bows lost to the Vandals 69-61 on Feb. 2 in Honolulu.
