Rainbows Clip San Francisco In Series Finale

Box Score Box Score

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team closed an intensively competitive series with San Francisco on Sunday, topping the Dons 3-2 at Les Murakami Stadium. UH improves to 14-7 while USF drops to 10-11.

The Rainbows again had a solid combined pitching performance. Lawrence Chew (1-1) picked up his first win, tossing three scoreless innings in relief of starter Jon Flinn. Jesse Moore pitched the final two innings to pick up his second save of the season.

The 'Bows broke the tie in the fifth inning after both teams scored a pair of early runs. Zach Swasey (1 H, 1 RBI) hit a bases loaded grounder to first that was snared by Nik Balog (0-4). With Balog sprawled out on the turf, Stephen Ventimilia was able to race home from third. Ventimilia led the 'Bows, batting 2-4 with two runs scored.

The Dons threw five pitchers on the afternoon, with starter Christian Ceciliio (1-3) receiving the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings allowing one earned run on five hits.  Justin Maffei had two hits and one run to lead USF at the plate.

Hawai'i opened the scoring in the first inning off a USF miscue. Swasey's grounder to third ricocheted off third baseman Bob Cruikshank (0-2), allowing Ventimilia to scamper home.

UH plated one more run in the first inning, but USF tied the game with a pair of fourth-inning runs. The Dons were opportunistic as well, as a bases loaded wild pitch by Flinn and an infield ground out by Hendricks (0-2) that scored Maffei accounted for the two runs.

Flinn tossed four innings in his second start of the season, allowing two runs on four hits.

There were 2,780 tickets issued for today's contest, and a turnstile count of 1,419.

The Rainbows now head out on the road for the first time this season. UH will play one game against Portland on Tuesday, Mar. 20, then travel to Spokane, Wash. for a four-game series against Gonzaga. That series will begin Thursday, Mar. 22.
