Match Notes
HONOLULU – For the fifth consecutive week, the 11th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will play a team ranked among the top four in the country when it hosts No. 4 Brigham Young for a two-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17 at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve for both matches is 7:00 p.m.
The Warriors (7-12, 4-10 MPSF) began this brutal stretch with two-match series against then-No. 2 UC Irvine, followed by No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 USC, and No. 3 Stanford. UH dropped the first seven matches, tying a school losing streak record, before snapping the skid with a four-set victory at Stanford. After the completion of this week's series, the Warriors will have played 10 consecutive matches – more than one third of their season – against teams ranked in the top four nationally.
Brigham Young (15-4, 11-3) is third in the MPSF standings and moved up to No. 4 in this week's AVCA poll after sweeping Pacific last week in Provo to conclude an eight-match homestand. The Cougars enter this week's series having won nine of their last 10, including their last four matches against Pepperdine and UOP. Former UH head coach Mike Wilton is on the BYU coaching staff as an assistant coach. Wilton was Hawai'i's head coach for 16 seasons and compiled a 316-167 record.
The last time BYU came to Honolulu, the teams were scheduled to play the opener of the series at the Stan Sheriff Center and the rematch on Maui. After UH rallied to win the first match in five-sets, a tsunami warning altered the teams' trip to Maui and the match was rescheduled two days later in Honolulu. The Warriors won the match in straight sets.
