Final Results

NAMPA, Idaho – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team picked up two more medals, including a gold by Madara Apine in the triple jump, on the final day of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Saturday, at Jacksons Track at the Idaho Sports Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine concluded the three-day meet with four medals and 67 team points, their most in each category in three years. UH finished in seventh place behind team champion Utah State (144), who unseated five-time defending champion Louisiana Tech, Idaho (110), New Mexico State (94), LTU (89), Nevada (86), Fresno State (71), and UH.

After earning two medals on Friday, Hawai'i's Madara Apine and TeRina Keenan won medals in the triple jump and shot put, respectively. Apine's gold in the triple jump was the program's first in the event at the indoor championships in school history. The Ikskile, Latvia native had previously won silver in each of the past two WAC Indoor meets.

Apine leaped 41-5 (12.62m) to easily out-distance runner-up Deborah Amoah of Nevada, who jumped 39-10.5 (12.15m). Apine, who fouled on her first two attempts, posted a mark on her third attempt, which was still better than each of the 15 competitors' best distance. She set her final mark on her sixth and final attempt breaking her previous school record that she set earlier this season.

Senior TeRina Keenan took the bronze medal in the shot put with a personal best mark of 50-9.25 (15.47m) to win her first career medal in the event. In fact, the medal was her first at a WAC Indoor Championship and she became just the second UH athlete in school history to win a shot put medal at the meet.

Teammate Alex Porlier Langlois was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 45-9.25 (13.95m).

Senior Ashley Aitken just missed out on a medal in the mile, placing fourth with a time of 4:57.34 which is the second fastest time in school history. Later in the day, she competed in the 3000-,eter run and placed seventh, crossing the finish line in 10:12.40.

During the three-day meet, UH athletes earned five all-WAC second team honors and achieved three school records and 10 personal best marks.
