Track & Field Grabs Two Medals On Day 2 Of WAC Indoor

NAMPA, Idaho – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team won two medals and is currently tied for fourth place after the conclusion of Day 2 of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Friday, at Jacksons Track at the Idaho Sports Complex.
 
Utah State leads the team standings with 70 points followed by New Mexico State (48), Fresno State (38), UH and Idaho (36), Nevada (29), and Louisiana Tech (15).

In all, UH athletes set two school records and nine personal best marks.
 
For the fourth consecutive year, senior Sarah Saddleton captured the silver medal in the high jump, clearing 5-6 (1.68m). It also marked the Auckland, New Zealand native's sixth career WAC medal in the event, which includes one gold at the 2011 Outdoor Championships and five silvers. The event was won by Nevada's La Tijera Avery, who cleared 5-9.25 (1.76m). UH junior Samantha Balentine and senior Karen Guravska, tied for seventh at 5-5 (1.65m).
 
Four UH pole vaulters scored team points, which was a team record, including a bronze medal performance by Camie Kohashi. The junior from Honolulu, O'ahu cleared a personal best 12-2.75 (3.73m) on her final attempt. UH's other three athletes cleared 11-9 (3.58m) with junior Cecilia Durocher, sophomore Kaleigh Morrison, and freshman Robyn Morioka taking the Nos. 5-7 spots.

Freshman Andrea Hinkle set a new school record in the 60-meters, placing 13th with a time of 7.90 seconds. She also broke the 200-meters mark with a time of 25.41 seconds, however, teammate sophomore Ashley Satterwhite bettered that mark at 25.31 seconds. 
 
In prelims, senior Ashley Aitken and sophomore Samantha Esperanza qualified for the mile and 60-meter hurdles finals, which will be held on Saturday. Aitken posted a time of 5:12.77 to grab the eighth and final spot in the finals while Esperanza also took eighth with mark of 9.03 seconds.
 
Senior Emma MacCorquodale placed seventh in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 55-8.5 (16.98m). Sophomore Joanna Franke-Kuhn was 11th with a new PR 53-8.5 (16.37m).
 
The meet concludes on Saturday.
