HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (10-16, 5-6 WAC) were overpowered by Fresno State (23-4, 11-0 WAC), 83-52 on Thursday night. The 'Bows had a rough first half, but UH battled back fighting until the end of the game. Hawai`i was led by
Breanna Arbuckle who had 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks which moved her into third place in the UH record books.
Arbuckle went 6-for-14 from the floor and had two assists and a steal to fill the stat line. Her three blocks in the game pushed her past former UH great Nani Cockett's career block into third place in Hawai`i history with 142 swats.
Kamilah Jackson and
Kalei Adolpho both had eight points. Jackson grabbed seven rebounds while Adolpho had a game-high 12 boards. A pair of seniors—
Courtney Gaddis and
Carlotta Mingo sparked the 'Bows with a combined 12-points. Gaddis was 2-of-3 with a 3-pointer and two free throws for seven points and two rebounds. Mingo came in late in the game and scored a career-high five points with an offensive board.
The 'Bows got blitzed in the first half, with the Bulldogs building over a 20 point lead in the first 10 minutes and a 30 point lead with four minutes left in the first half. Fresno State went on a 22-to-2 run and never looked back in the game. Hawai`i managed a season-low 13 points in the first half—shooting just 23.1% while Fresno State shot 44.7% from the floor with six three-pointers made. The stifling Bulldog defense pressured UH into 17 turnovers in the first half alone.
But in the second half, Hawai`i fought back, going on a 17-to-2 run midway through the second half to cut their deficit down to 22 points. But a pair of treys by Fresno State's Bree Farley and Rosie Moult halted the UH rally, and the Bulldogs started to pull away again.
Fresno State won their 12th game in a row and remains unbeaten in conference action at 11-0. The Bulldogs were led by Farley who poured in 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting with four 3-pointers. Ki-ki Moore was second with 19 points and Moult added 16.
Hawai`i will play its final home game of the season this Saturday against Nevada at 7:00 p.m. It will be senior night for four Rainbow Wahine—Arbuckle, Gaddis, Mingo, and
Rebecca Dew.
