LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team suffered one of its most decisive conference losses ever with a 115-73 setback to New Mexico State Thursday at the Pan American Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 15-12 overall and 6-5 in the Western Athletic Conference with its second straight road loss.
UH entered the game with a chance to move up into a tie for second place in the WAC standings, but instead suffered its second-worst loss ever in league play to remain in fourth place with three league games remaining. The 42-point loss is only eclipsed by a 44-point loss at Utah State in 2010, while the 115 points were the most UH surrendered since a 126 output by TCU in 1998.
Recent history hasn't been kind to the 'Bows in Las Cruces and this meeting was no different. UH remained winless in seven all-time trips to the Pan American and suffered their fifth straight loss there by double digits. The 'Bows trailed by 21 at halftime and by as many as 44 points late in the game.
Daniel Mullings posted a triple-double to lead the Aggies (21-8, 8-3 WAC) to their fourth straight win. The freshman guard logged career highs of 28 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Mullings was the second straight opponent to record a triple-double after Kareem Jamar accomplished the feat in Montana's win over UH last Saturday.
Joston Thomas led UH with 13 points before fouling out with 11:50 left in the game. In his first start in more than a month,
Trevor Wiseman scored 12 points, while
Shaquille Stokes scored 10 points for his third straight game in double-digits off the bench.
Thomas was one four different Rainbow Warriors to foul out as the Aggies went to the line a total of 43 times. New Mexico State shot 60 percent from the field and out-scored UH 42-22 in the paint. UH turned the ball over a season-high 24 times with New Mexico State scoring 38 points off those turnovers.
UH hung close early in the game before things started to unravel midway through the first half. The Aggies held a slim 20-18 advantage with 11:17 left in the half, but began to break the game open with a 14-2 run over the next three minutes for a double-digit lead. The Aggies out-scored UH 31-13 in the final 10:40 to put the 'Bows in a 52-31 hole at half.
The 'Bows came out with renewed energy in the second half scoring the first seven points out of the locker room to cut the deficit to 14. However the Aggies responded with eight straight points to quell any UH hopes for a rally and start another huge run that ended with a 63-point second half.
UH looks to rebound when it travels to Ruston, La., for its final WAC road game at Louisiana Tech. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. CT (11:00 a.m. HT).
