HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team was defeated Monday, 12-6, in its series finale with Oregon. UH drops to 1-3 on the season while UO improves to 3-1.
Collin Bennett continued his solid hitting to open the season, batting 2-2 with one run, one RBI, and two walks.
Stephen Ventimilia recorded one hit, two runs, and one RBI, and
Cody Clark had one hit, one run, and drew three walks.
J.J. Altobelli was the thorn in the 'Bows' side. He belted three doubles while batting 5-6, and added two runs and two RBI. Ryon Healy had two hits, one run, and four RBI, and Shaun Chase added a triple and a homerun.
It was another rocky start for the Rainbows as Oregon plated seven runs in the third inning to take an early 8-0 lead. Freshman pitcher
Scott Squier (0-1) had a rough outing in his first collegiate appearance, surrendering five earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Jeff Gold (1-0) earned the win for Oregon in five innings of work. He allowed four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
The 'Bows would show some resiliency though by responding with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Consecutive base hits by Bennett,
Trevor Podratz (1 H, 2 RBI), and
Conner George (1 H, 1 R) helped cut the lead to 8-3. The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Ducks responded with a pair of runs in the fourth to build the lead back up to seven runs.
There were 3,480 tickets issued for today's contest, and a turnstile count of 2,221.
The Rainbows will look to regroup when they host Wagner College in a five-game series at Les Murakami Stadium. The series opens Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6:35 p.m.
