HONOLULU – In a 12-inning affair on Saturday, the University of Hawai'i baseball team was defeated by No. 27 Oregon, 3-2. With the result, both teams move to 1-1 on the season.
Collin Bennett and Pi'ikea Kitamura each had two hits to lead the Rainbows, with Bennett adding one run and one RBI. Newcomer
David Longville pitched 4.2 strong innings in relief of starter
Jarrett Arakawa, shutting out the Ducks while surrendering just three hits.
Patrick O'Rourke (0-1) was tagged with the loss in two innings of work.
Jimmie Sherfy (1-0) was too much for the 'Bows out of the Oregon bullpen. He tossed 5.2 innings of scoreless relief to hand UH its first loss of the season. Aaron Payne did the damage for OU at the plate, hitting 4-5 with one run scored.
The 'Bows struck first, capitalizing on a pair of Oregon errors in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Bennett opened the scoring with an RBI single, scoring
Kaeo Aliviado (1 H, 1 R) from third base. The Ducks then appeared to come unglued when they committed their second error of the inning off a
Max Duval infield grounder. Bennett came home on the miscue to give the 'Bows a 2-0 lead after three innings.
Oregon battled back in the sixth inning to tie the game. The Ducks opened with a pair of singles, shortly followed by a game-tying double by Brett Hambright (1 H, 2 RBI). The Ducks threatened to take the lead but Longville pitched his way out forcing an inning-ending double play.
A stalemate ensued until the 12
th inning when the Ducks plated a run to take a 3-2 lead. Payne doubled, then stole third and scored on a wild pitch by O'Rourke.
UH had one last crack at it in the bottom of the 12
th inning.
Cody Clark drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Aliviado. Aliviado battled Sherfy to a full count, but struck out swinging to end the game.
There were 4,423 tickets issued for tonight's sell out contest, and a turnstile count of 3,415.
Game three of the series is set for Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
