HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (4-6, 0-0 Big West) battled back and showed their grit and determination in defeating Cincinnati (7-5, 0-0 Big East) in overtime, 65-63. Hawai`i's Monica DeAngelis led Hawai`i with a UH career-high 21 points—including the game-winning pull-up jumper with seven seconds on the clock. Kamilah Martin notched her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and a game and season-high 15 rebounds.

Altogether, the Rainbow Wahine had four players score in double figures, led by DeAngelis, a senior transfer point guard who played all 45 minutes. She was 5-of-12 from the floor—including four 3-pointers made and was also 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. DeAngelis added four rebounds, two assists and a steal. While playing at Loyola Marymount last year, DeAngelis poured in her collegiate career-high 27 points and tied an LMU record with seven treys against Cal Poly on Dec. 19.

Martin was once again solid in the post for the 'Bows, scoring on 5-of-10 shots and grabbing six offensive and nine defensive boards with an assist and a steal in 41 minutes of action.

Sydney Haydel and Ashleigh Karaitiana scored 12 and 11 points apiece. Haydel came up huge for the 'Bows in the overtime period, scoring five of UH's nine points with a steal and a rebound. Her 12 points was a season-high in her second start of the season. She was 4-of-5 in field goals with a rebound, two assists and two steals. Karaitiana was shackled with early foul trouble in both the first and second half but scored in double digits for the fourth time this season.

The Rainbow Wahine out-rebounded the Bearcats 39-to-37 and outscored Cincinnati 17-to-16 in points off of turnovers. But Cincinnati held the edge in points in the paint (26-to-20) and bench scoring (16-to-9).

In a hard-fought first half, the 'Bows scored four points on a jumper by Haydel and a layup by Martin to take a 27-23 lead into the half. UH continued that momentum into the second half, scoring the first 10 points—highlighted by two treys by DeAngelis--while the defense clamped down, holding the Bearcats scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half. Cincinnati finally snapped UH's 14-0 run with a layup by Dayeesha Hollins at 12:45 with UH leading, 37-25. Hawai`i held between and eight and 10 point cushion until the three-minute mark when the Bearcats started their charge down the stretch. Cincinnati closed on the 'Bows with a 19-to-8 that included going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. In the waning moments of the second half and the Bearcats fighting their way back into the game, Shawna-Lei Kuehu drained a jumper to give UH a 53-49 lead with 50-seconds left, but Cincinnati's Hollins drilled a 3-pointer to cut their deficit to one point. DeAngelis coolly sank a pair of free throws to give UH a three-point lead with 21-seconds left. But Cincinnati's Chelsea Jamison hit a bucket in the lane with 9-seconds to trail, 55-54. After a UH turnover, Kuehu rejected a Kayla Cook shot with DeAngelis grabbing the rebound and getting the ball to Vicky Tagalicod. The clock had ticked down, but after reviewing the play, 0.5 seconds was put back on the clock putting Tagalicod on the line to shoot two. She was able to sink just one-of-two free throws to give UH a 56-54 lead. Then, with 0.5 seconds left on the clock, the Bearcats heaved a hail-mary pass from the far endline to Hollins who put it in for a layup to tie the game at 56-56 as time expired to send the game into overtime.

In overtime, after seeing UH lead for the last 25 minutes of the game, it was Cincinnati who jumped out to a quick four-point lead on two jumpers by Lesha Dunn and Jamison. But the 'Bows didn't panic and proceeded to battle back. Martin and Haydel both made two free throws to tie the game for the sixth time with 3:17 left in the extra period. Cincinnati's Alexis Durley then got one free throw and UH and the Bearcats traded jumpers leaving UH down by one. Haydel then made one-of-two free throws to tie the game with 40-seconds left. UH's defense then forced a turnover and with seven seconds left on the clock, DeAngelis drove the lane and pulled up to sink what proved to be the game-winning shot.

It was UH's first win over a Big East team since Nov. 29, 2003 when the 'Bows defeated Syracuse 72-63 and it was the first time since UH played an overtime game since March 3, 2011 when UH defeated Utah State on Senior Night, 72-71. It is the first time this season that Hawai`i has won two games in a row.

UH will play Alabama (9-3, 0-0 SEC) for the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Invitational tournament title on Sunday at 5:00 pm.
