HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team came back to defeat cross-town rival Hawai`i Pacific in an exhibition game, 72-62. Kamilah Martin scored a team-high 14 points while
Monica DeAngelis changed the game in the second half, sinking 4-of-4 from 3-point-land for 12 points. Martin,
Stephanie Ricketts and
Kalei Adolpho secured a team-best five rebounds apiece.
The Sea Warriors came out running on all cylinders holding the lead for the first 15 minutes of the game. HPU built a 10-point lead and led, 21-11 with 12:30 left in the first half. But then the 'Bows started to chip away, going on a 14-to-3 run to overtake HPU, 25-24 on a
Shawna-Lei Kuehu jumper with 5:08 left. The lead see-sawed back and forth three more time before the half but it was Hawai`i Pacific who took a 30-29 lead into the half. HPU out-rebounded UH 22-to-17 in the first half and shot just a smidge under 40% from the floor.
In the second half, the Rainbow Wahine took control from the get-go taking the lead in the first minute on a Martin jumpshot and they never looked back. UH outscored the Sea Warriors, 43-to-32—including a 19-to-5 run that gave UH a 16 point lead. The 'Bows battled back on the glass to out-rebound HPU, 19-to-10 in the half and 36-to-32 for the game. After shooting 34.5% (10-for-29) in the first half, Hawai`i improved its field goal percentage to 53.1% (17-for-32) in the second half—including 7-for-11 from beyond the 3-point arch with treys from four different players--DeAngelis,
Vicky Tagalicod,
Pua Kailiawa, and
Ashleigh Karaitiana. UH dished out 22 assists, led by Karaitiana's five with
Marissa Wimbley,
Sydney Haydel and Martin adding three apiece. Hawai`i committed just 11 turnovers in the game and UH's bench outscored HPU's reserves, 43-to-12. Eleven different Rainbow Wahine were able to score at least two points in the game.
The exhibition game marked the first game for Adolpho who joined the basketball team after helping the women's volleyball team advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Adolpho scored six points with five rebounds and a block, making her presence known in the paint. It also was the first significant game back for Kuehu after suffering a concussion in the season-opener at SanFrancisco. Kuehu scored eight points with three rebounds and two assists in just 16 minutes of action.
HPU (5-2, 1-0 Pacific West) was led by Ieva Nagy who had game-highs in points (22) and rebounds (nine). Susannah Walmsley added 14 points while Chiarra Duncan-Perry had four assists.
Next up for the Rainbow Wahine is the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Invitational which features LIU, Cincinnati and Alabama from Dec. 28-30.
