HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (2-3, 0-0 Big West) defeated Oregon, 85-73 on the opening night of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown. Kamilah Martin recorded her 31st career and second double-double of the season with game-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman
Ashleigh Karaitiana also logged her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards while
Vicky Tagalicod racked up 17 points in her first significant time on the court this season.
Martin's 23 points was a season high for the junior forward. She was 10-of-18 from the floor and added three assists and two steals. Martin also grabbed a season-high five offensive boards to go with nine defensive rebounds. She now has scored in double-figures three times this season and 42 times in her three seasons and tallied double-digit rebounds for the third time this season and 39 times in her career.
Karaitiana, the Aussie rookie, was 4-of-10 in field goals and had three assists, a block, and two steals in 34 minutes of action. Tagalicod came off the bench to score her season-high 17 points. She scored eight points and sparked the UH rally in the first half that led to the win. Tagalicod, who missed the first two games of the season to injury had only played 18 minutes combined in the last two games this season. She was 5-of-8 from the floor with a trey and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in 17 minutes off the bench.
Oregon (0-3, 0-0 PAC-12) took the early lead and built their biggest lead of the night with 11:24 left in the first half at 11-16. But then the 'Bows buckled down on defensive and started to score on offense, going on an 11-to-1 run to overtake the Ducks for a 21-17 lead with 7:59 on the clock. Oregon would tie the game just once more at 21-21 at the 6:36 mark, but the 'Bows then started to pull away for good. UH held a 43-37 lead at the half with
Monica DeAngelis and Tagalicod leading UH with eight points apiece with Martin grabbing eight rebounds with five points.
In the second half, Hawai'i kept things rolling on offense while holding the Ducks in check. UH extended its lead to as much as 24 points off of an 18-to-4 run during a seven minute span from 12:35 to 4:54. Oregon, however, closed the game on a 14-to-4 run to cut their deficit to just 12 points. Eight of those last 14 points came on free throws.
The Rainbow Wahine out rebounded Oregon, 43-to-30 and dominated in the paint, 44-to-18—with 26 of those points coming in the second half. UH also was able to convert the Ducks' miscues into 22 points and outscored their opponent, 13-0 in second chance points. The 'Bows shot 48.6% in the second half, improving on their 45.5% in the first half. And after UO sunk six treys in the first half, UH's defense adjusted to hold the free-shooting Ducks to just two 3-pointers made in the second half.
Oregon also had four players score in double-digits, led by Amanda Delgado who scored 19 with five treys made.
Hawai`i's 85 points were the most scored since Nov. 23, 2007 when the 'Bows won 85-51 over Lipscomb. It also marked the first win over a PAC-12 opponent since Nov. 21, 2010 when UH downed Oregon State, 54-49.
The Rainbow Wahine continue their tournament on Saturday at 12:00 pm against Arkansas, with No. 13 Oklahoma taking on Oregon at 2:00 pm.
