UH Swimming Tops BYU In Season Opener

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded their home-opener against BYU on Friday and Saturday, defeating the Cougars at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex. The two-day meet concluded with heavy hearts following the passing of junior swimmer Peter Chi on Friday to an apparent cardiac arrest.
 
The Rainbow Wahine outscored BYU 206-146, winning 13 of 19 events, while the Rainbow Warriors inched past the Cougars 183-168, taking first in eight.
 
On the women's side, senior Taylor Ritenberg led the team winning three events in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.49), 200 breaststroke (2:18.77), and 200 IM (2:07.02). Sophomore Jasmine Alkhaldi grabbed two first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:52.48) and 100 freestyle (51.43) events.
 
It was a team effort altogether, as Hayden Maclean and Rachel Cote won the 400 IM (4:28.91) and 100 backstroke (1:04.49), respectively. The Rainbow Wahine swept all relay events.
 
Newcomer Lauren Hall led the women's diving squad finishing first on the 1-meter with a score of 296.45 and second on the 3-meter (297.75).
 
On the men's side, senior Luca Mazzurana took first in both the 100 butterfly (49.09) and 200 butterfly (1:50.39). Returnees Gen Yamamoto won the 1650 freestyle (16.09.20) and Eli Wong won the 200 breaststroke (2:04.81).
 
Additionally, newcomers Ryan Makuta and Kacy Johnson debuted with first place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:41.03) and 500 freestyle (4:35.13), respectively. UH men also won the 200 medley relay with a team of Ali Maclean, Paulo de Paula, Mazzurana and Ruddy Kiessling (1:31.52).
 
Returning diver Luke Hayes led the men finishing second on both the 3-meter (291.80) and 1-meter (313.70) boards.
 
Swimming & diving returns to action Oct. 19 in a dual-meet at Arizona.
