SEATTLE, Wash. –
Madara Apine's new school record in the triple jump, highlighted the University of Hawai'i women's track and field team's performance at the University of Washington Invitational Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.
The senior from Ikskile, Latvia was the meet's top collegiate finisher and placed second overall with a mark of 40-9.5 (12.43m) and finished one inch behind winner Allison Wilder (40-10.5/12.46m). Apine held the previous school record which she set last year of 40-1.5 (12.23m).
Senior
TeRina Keenan set a personal best in the shot put with a heave of 49-1.5 (14.97m) and placed second overall among 17 competitors. Southern Utah's Kayla Kovar won the competition with a throw of 49-5 (15.06m).
Among the track athletes, sophomore
Samantha Esperanza finished 14
th in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 9.17 seconds.
On Friday, sophomore
Kaleigh Morrison set a new personal best in the pentathlon. The Tigard, Ore., native scored 3,271 points in the five disciplines, more than 100 points better than her previous lifetime best.
In the pole vault, junior Cecilia Dorocher and freshman
Robyn Morioka tied for the top mark in their flight. The UH duo each cleared 12-6.52 (3.82m) and tied for sixth overall.
The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to host the Dr. Donnis Thompson Memorial, Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field. The meet is the second of five all-comer meets during the Sunset Series which UH will host during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
