Warriors To Host 18th Outrigger Hotels Volleyball Invitational

Match Notes

HONOLULU – The 13th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will host the 18th Outrigger Hotels Volleyball Invitational, Thursday, Jan. 12 through Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Matches are 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. each night.

The Outrigger is considered one of the most prestigious early season tournaments in the country. The host Warriors have won six titles, most recently in 2010. Last season, UH finished winless in the tournament for the first time ever.

Third-ranked UCLA has made 11 Outrigger appearances with six titles to its credit. No. 9 Lewis, of the Mideastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, will make its fifth appearance while Division III Springfield is a first-time participant.

UH (1-1) is coming off a season-opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series split with UC San Diego last weekend. UCLA finished 2-1 in last week's UCSB/asics Invitational, falling the championship match to UC Irvine in four sets. The Bruins defeated Cal State Northridge and defending NCAA champion Ohio State to reach the title match. Lewis split a two-match series with Pepperdine last week, winning the first match in four and dropping the rematch in five. Springfield is opening its season with the Outrigger Invitational.
