HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i scored four second-half goals to win the annual alumnae match, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the UH Lower Campus Field.
After spotting the alumnae a 1-0 halftime lead, the Rainbow Wahine roared back with four unanswered goals after the break, including consecutive goals by freshman striker
Tiana Fujimoto.
The alumnae struck first in the 30
th minute when the leading scorers in program history –Natasha Kai and Arlene Devitt—hooked up for the opening goal. Devitt manuevered through the UH defense and fed Kai in the middle of the box for any easy score.
The Rainbow Wahine responded in the second half when
Krystal Pascua headed the ball to a streaking Fujimoto for a breakaway goal to equalize the score in the 55
th minute. The duo combined again just 10 minutes later when Pascua sent a cross to Fujimoto in the middle of the box for the go-ahead score.
Amber Fuller added an insurance goal in the 76
th minute off a feed from
Rachel Domingo, while
Skye Shimabukuro capped the UH second-half scoring spree with a rebound shot in the 87
th minute.
Despite giving up four goals, alumnae goalkeeper Erin Chow acquitted herself well, making numerous acrobatic saves. Also playing for the alumnae were former UH standouts Britta Bourne, Adria Campbell, Jessican Domingo,
Chelsea Deptula, Taryn Fukuroku, Carmel Hurley, Mia Moe,
Mari Punzal, Joelle Sugai and Noelle Takemoto.
UH will now open up Western Athletic Conference action at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium when they host Utah State on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. and Nevada on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 5:00 p.m.
