HONOLULU – At the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, the No.10 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team defeated No.22 Ohio State, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-14). It was the opener for both teams in the tournament as UH improves to 4-0 while the Buckeyes drop to 4-1. UCLA defeated Long Beach State, 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 21-25, 25-18), in the opening match of the tournament.
Chanteal Satele led the 'Bows with 11 kills for a .474 kills percentage. Jane Croson posted eight kills and 12 digs and Emily Hartong added nine kills to help UH to its third sweep in four matches.
Emily Danks led the Buckeyes with a match-high 12 kills.
The 'Bows started the match by scoring seven of the first nine points in set one. Ohio State responded with a run of its own to come within a point at 10-9, but Hawai'i would push the lead back up to six points and grabbed the set one win on a Brittany Hewitt (4 K, 3 D) block.
Set two proved to be much tougher but Hawai'i rallied for a 25-23 win to seize control of the match. OSU scored the set's first four points then pushed to a 15-8 lead on a pair of kills by Danks and Mari Hole (11 K, 5 D). UH rallied and, off consecutive kills by Kanani Danielson (7 K, 5 D), knotted the score at 19-19. The teams traded points before Danielson and Croson recorded back-to-back kills to win the set for UH.
UH made quick work of OSU in set three as they cruised to a 25-14 win.
There were 5,713 tickets issued for the match, and a turnstile count of 4,162.
Day 2 of the tournament continues Friday when UH will take on No. 23 Long Beach State at 7:00 p.m. Ohio State and UCLA will play at 5:00 p.m.
