WAIPAHU, O'ahu – Despite being a heavy underdog, the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team gave California a good battle in a 3-0 loss in the 'OHANA Hotels Resorts No Ka Oi Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. With its second win of the weekend, the Golden Bears captured the tournament title.

The Bears demolished North Dakota State, 7-0, on Friday and defeated UH, 8-1, in last year's match in Berkeley. Still, the Rainbow Wahine (0-3), coming off a tough 3-2 loss to NDSU on Saturday night, showed plenty of resolve. The Golden Bears clung to a 1-0 lead late in the match, before needing two goals in the final 13 minutes to secure the win.

UH more than held its own in the first half, particularly in the first 20 minutes when they pressed the action on Cal's side of the field. However, Cal got on the board in the 33rd minute  when UH was unable to successfully clear the ball after a free kick near the sideline. Mekenna Deback who checked into the match a mere minute earlier claimed a deflected ball and sent home a low-liner far post from about 10 yards out.

The Rainbow Wahine nearly tied the match in the 54th minute when Brittani Lum rocketed a shot that bounced off the cross bar. Krystal Pascua gathered the rebound and fired off a hard shot that was saved by a diving Emily Kruger. That would be the best opportunities UH would have all night as Cal sealed the victory with a Miranda White goal off a corner kick in the 78th minute and a Katie Benz header five minutes later.

The Bears held a 17-3 shot advantage for the match with UH goalkeeper Kanani Taaca tallying seven saves.

The Rainbow Wahine now head to the road for the first time this season where they will play a trio of games in California, beginning with a match at nationally ranked UC Irvine on Friday, Sept. 2.
