Rainbows Sweep Nevada, Win Series

RENO, Nev. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep Saturday over Nevada. The Rainbows rallied to win game one, 8-7, then shutout the Wolf Pack in game two, 4-0. Hawai'i improves to 27-20 overall and 12-4 in the WAC, with Nevada dropping to 17-26 overall and 6-9 in conference. Zach Swasey batted 5-10 on the day with one homerun and four RBI.

Game one saw the 'Bows rally from a six-run deficit after the first inning. The rally started in the second inning when a Sean Montplaisir triple and an A.J. Bayus homerun helped cut the Nevada lead in half. Trailing 7-4 in the fifth inning, UH plated four runs to take a one-run lead and complete the comeback.

Swasey recorded three hits and two RBI, and Kolten Wong added two hits, one run, and two RBI. Nick Melino led Nevada with two hits and two runs.

Blair Walters (6-1) came out of the bullpen to pitch 2.1 shutout innings for the win, with Lenny Linsky collecting his 11th save of the season. Mark Joukoff (2-6) was tagged with the loss for the Wolf Pack.

Randy Yard (2-0) guided the Rainbows to the win in game two, pitching five shutout innings in his first career start for the 'Bows. Jesse Moore pitch three innings in relief with Linsky finishing the game in a non-save situation. Brock Stassi (1-2) received the loss in 7.2 innings of work allowing four runs on 10 hits.

Swasey scored Wong from third with an RBI-single for UH's first run, then added to the total with his homerun in the sixth inning. Wong and Bayus hit RBI-singles in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, to complete the scoring.

Stassi batted 3-4 to lead Nevada.

The Rainbows return home to play their final home series of the season. They will play San Jose State Thursday, May 12, at 6:35 p.m., a doubleheader Friday, March 13, at 3:35 p.m., and conclude the series Sunday, March 15, at 1:05 p.m.
