Rainbows Mercy Ruled By Aggies

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team was defeated by New Mexico State on Friday, 18-8, via the mercy rule. The Rainbows fall to 31-23 overall and 16-7 in the WAC, with the Aggies improving to 34-21 overall and 9-14 in conference. 

Kolten Wong and Jeff Van Doornum both batted 2-4, with Wong recording two runs and one RBI and Van Doornum adding one run and two RBI. Tanner Waite hit 4-4 with one run and five RBI to lead NMSU. 

Zach Gallagher (5-3) received the loss for Hawai'i. He allowed six earned runs in two innings before being relieved by Jesse Moore. Tyler Mack (6-4) allowed eight runs in six innings to earn the win for the Aggies. 

Despite the lopsided score, the 'Bows held an early 4-0 lead. Sean Montplaisir (1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) and A.J. Bayus (1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) hit back-to-back homeruns as UH appeared prime to clinch a share of the WAC regular season title.   

New Mexico State got going in the third inning, batting around the order twice to the tune of 13 runs. Zac Fisher (3-5, 3 R, 3 RBI) hit a two-run homer and Waite had a pair of two-RBI base hits. 

Hawai'i will attempt to clinch a share of the WAC regular season title on Saturday, May 21. The Rainbows and Aggies play their series and regular season finale starting at 1:05 p.m. MST (9:05 a.m. HST).
