Rainbows Too Much For Spartans

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team defeated San Jose State on Thursday, 8-2. The Rainbows improve to 28-20 overall and 13-4 in the WAC, while SJSU drops to 31-19 overall and 9-8 in conference. 

Matt Sisto (4-4) earned the win for the 'Bows, pitching seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits. Roberto Padilla (8-5) was tagged with the loss for the Spartans. He tossed just three and one-third innings surrendering four earned runs on five hits. 

Jeff Van Doornum led the way for the 'Bows. He batted 2-4 including a backbreaking three-run triple in the fourth inning. With UH already leading 5-2, Van Doornum ripped a shot to the wall in right centerfield to score Collin Bennett, Zack Swasey, and Pi'ikea Kitamura. 

With the win, Hawai'i maintains its 1.5-game lead over Fresno State for first place, and now holds a four-game lead over third-place San Jose State. 

The Rainbows opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Garrett Champion (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) delivered a base hit through the right side of the infield, scoring Bennett (1 H, 2 R, 1 RBI) from second base. 

SJSU responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Zack Jones (2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) delivered an RBI-double followed by Nick Borg's RBI-single. 

There were 3,179 tickets sold for the contest, and a turnstile count of 2,067. 

The Rainbows and Spartans continue their series with a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch of game one is set for 3:35 p.m.
