Men’s Volleyball Completes Sweep Of Matadors

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team had their way against Cal State Northridge in a straight-set Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory, Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 25-19.
 
As a team, the Warriors (14-11, 12-8 MPSF) hit for a season-best .543 with its big three of Jonas Umlauft (21), Joshua Walker (20), and Steven Hunt (12) combining for 53 of the team's 60 kills. Umlauft posted his 12th match of 20 or more kills this season while Walker hit for a career-best .704 percentage with only one error in 27 swings.
 
The win assured Hawai'i, who defeated the Matadors in four on Friday, a winning record in conference play for the second straight year and sets up a crucial two-match series with top-ranked USC next week to close out the regular season.
 
The Matadors (6-20, 4-15) were led by Tanner Nua and Matt Stork, who each had 12 kills.
 
The Warriors came out on fire in Set 1, hitting .562 with Walker leading the way with eight kills. UH broke open the set with a six-point scoring run that included three kills and a block by Walker for a 22-15 lead.
 
CSUN battled back in Set 2, tying it at 19 after the teams traded side-outs for much of the frame. UH scored back-to-back points off of kills by Steven Hunt and Umlauft for a 21-19 lead but the Matadors tied it again at 22. The Warriors closed out the set with kills by Walker and Umlauft.
 
In the third set, Hawai'i scored four straight with an ace sandwiched between two illegal attack errors by CSUN for an 18-15 lead. UH strung together three more for a 23-17 lead.
 
The Warriors will next host top-ranked USC to close out the regular season, April 8-9, at the Stan Sheriff Center.
