Warrior Volleyball Continues Homestand With Two-Match Series With Pacific

Match Notes

HONOLULU – Coming off its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series sweep of the season, the No. 9 University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will host Pacific in a two-match conference series, Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m.
 
The Warriors (8-9, 6-6 MPSF) won both matches in straight sets over then-No. 9 Pepperdine last week in Honolulu. The sweep marked the first time since 2001 that UH swept the season series over Pepperdine and extended its win streak over the Waves to four, the longest since a seven-match win streak from 1988-90.
 
UH's Jonas Umlauft averaged 5.17 kills per set over the weekend and hit .480. He had 15 kills, four digs, and three blocks in Friday's win and 16 kills on .560 hitting and three blocks in the rematch. Outside hitter Joshua Walker averaged 4.33 kills per set on .435 hitting.
 
As a team, Hawai'i hit .409 in the series which improved its season percentage to .333, including .358 in league play, which is second only to MPSF leader USC's .377.
 
The No. 13 Tigers split a pair of road matches last week, winning at UC San Diego and falling in straight sets to UC Irvine. The win snapped a five-losing streak gave Pacific the season sweep of the series. Taylor Hughes leads the Tigers with a 3.66 kill average while Florian Gornick is averaging 3.16 kills per set. As a team, UOP is hitting .236.
 
Following the UOP series, the Warriors begin a four-week stretch where they will face three of the current top four teams in the MPSF standings - Long Beach State, Brigham Young, and leader USC.

Television Coverage: KFVE-TV (Ch. 5) will televise both matches live with Jim Leahey (play-by-play) and Ryan Tsuji (color). Rebroadcast of UH match at 10:30 p.m. each night.

Radio Coverage: ESPN Radio Honolulu will broadcast both matches live with Scott Robbs calling the action. Friday's match will air on 1500 AM while Saturday's match will air on 1420 AM.

Tickets: Lower-level $11; Upper-level adult $8, Upper-level senior citizen $7; Upper-level student (4-HS) $3. UH-Manoa students receive admission with validated ID.
Series Information: UH leads 36-1 and have won the last 27 meetings, including both matches in Stockton, Calif., last season. UH's only loss in the series was a 15-13, 10-15, 16-17, 15-9, 10-15 decision April 5, 1997 in Stockton, Calif. Hawai'i is 18-0 all-time in matches played in Honolulu.
