HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep tonight to No. 13 Cal State Fullerton. The Rainbows lost both games by a 4-2 score, and fall to 11-12 while the Titans improve to 15-8.
Game one saw a stellar performance by Titan pitcher Tyler Pill (3-0). He carried a perfect game into the seventh and final inning before Hawai'i plated two late runs. He finished with a complete game, allowing two earned runs on two hits with 11 strikeouts. Connor Little (2-1) suffered his first defeat of the season for UH. He pitched five and one-third innings allowing three runs on two hits.
Fullerton opened the scoring in the third inning when Ivory Thomas (2-2, 1 H, 1 RBI) hit a solo homerun to left field. The Titans added three more in the seventh inning led by a two-RBI base hit by Michael Lorenzen (1-3, 2 RBI).
The 'Bows came alive in the bottom of the seventh. RBI-doubles by Pi'ikea Kitamura (1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Michael Blake (1-3, 1 RBI) cut the lead to 4-2, but that was all UH would muster.
In the nightcap, the 'Bows got out to an early lead with two first-inning runs. Jeff Van Doornum (2-4, 1 R) doubled and was driven home by a Blake (2-3, 1 R) single one batter later. Zach Swasey (2-4) followed with an RBI-single of his own.
The Titans responded with one run each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, then increased the lead to 4-2 with an eighth-inning solo homerun by Nick Ramirez (2-5, 2 R, 1 RBI). UH would be unable to mount a rally, as they suffered the doubleheader sweep.
Jarrett Arakawa (1-2) received the loss for UH, allowing two earned runs in six and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts. Dylan Floro (3-2) pitched six innings to earn the win for Fullerton.
There were 4,255 tickets issued for the contest and a turnstile count of 3,079.
UH and Fullerton conclude their series tomorrow with a single game starting at 1:05 p.m.
