Water Polo Defeats No. 11 SDSU, 17-7

HONOLULU – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (11-5, 3-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) defeated No. 11 San Diego State tonight in conference play at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The first goal of the night went to San Diego State after Sarah Brady found the net with 6:13 on the clock. UH was soon to steal the lead 2-1 however, after freshman Kelly McKee and junior Monika Eggens scored back-to-back power-play goals to end the first quarter.

The Rainbow Wahine and the Aztecs rallied back and fourth to begin the second quarter. Senior Leonie Van Der Molen muscled in a goal to increase UH's lead, but SDSU's Leanne Ford answered back with a 6-on-5 goal.

Amarens Genee scored again for UH within the same minute, earning a 4-2 lead for the Rainbow Wahine. The Aztecs answered back again with a second goal by Brady, but the Rainbow Wahine followed with a 2-0 run until halftime, earning a 6-3 advantage.

Senior Dagmar Genee opened the third quarter with another goal for UH for a 7-3 lead. The Aztecs scored following an ejection on UH, but the Rainbow Wahine went on a four-goal run. McKee and senior Saara Majuri each scored two goals to give UH a strong 11-4 advantage.
 
Brady broke UH's run with 1:19 left in the third, but Van Der Molen scored a power-play goal with just under one minute left. SDSU had the last word however, when Kimmy Keach scored for the Aztecs with 20 seconds on the clock to end the third 12-6.

Monika Eggens set the pace of the final quarter, scoring a power-play goal with 6:46 left. Ford answered back for the Aztecs, bringing the score to 13-7, but UH went on another four-goal scoring run to take the match, 17-7.

Van Der Molen led the Rainbow Wahine with four goals, while Brady led the Aztecs with three.

UH continues its home stand tomorrow, Mar. 25 with a double-header against Cal State East Bay at 12:00 p.m. and UC San Diego at 6:00 p.m. All matches will be played at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.
