STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (3-2, 1-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) landed in fifth today at the Stanford Invitational, falling to No. 2 USC, 9-7 but coming back to defeat No. 9 Arizona State, 9-7.

UH trailed USC at first quarter, 3-1, and then put in three goals to match the Trojans' four in the second quarter, 7-4. Both teams held each other to one goal in the third period, bringing the score to 8-5. The Rainbow Wahine tried to catch up in the final quarter, outscoring the Trojans 2-1, but USC held onto the lead for a 9-7 victory.

Senior Monika Eggens led the Rainbow Wahine with three goals, while Nadia Dan also performed a hat trick to lead the Trojans .

UH shut out Arizona State in the first quarter of play, holding the Sun Devils to no goals and scoring one. The Rainbow Wahine muscled in two goals to ASU's one to end halftime with a 3-1 lead. UH outscored the Sun Devils again in the third quarter, 2-1. In the final quarter, ASU put up a fight with five goals to answer UH's four, but the Rainbow Wahine held onto the lead for a 9-7 victory for fifth place.

Monika Eggens, senior Carmen Eggens, and senior Saara Majuri each scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine, while Mariam Salloum led the Aztecs with four.

UH will next see action when it faces fourth-ranked UCLA on Feb. 24 in Los Angeles, Calif. for conference play.
