Women's Hoops Battles Idaho in "Pink Zone" Game

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (7-14, 1-8 WAC) concludes its three-game homestand with its "Pink Zone" game against the Idaho Vandals (12-8, 5-3 WAC) on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7:00 pm following the annual Alumnae Game at the Stan Sheriff Center. The team will be wearing pink and encourages its fans to do the same.

The 'Bows are looking to avenge their 48-72 loss at Moscow on Jan. 13 earlier this year. Most recently, Hawai'i snapped its nine-game losing streak with a win over Boise State, 69-53 (Feb. 2). It was the 'Bows' first win in conference this season.

Freshman Kamilah Jackson, is third in the NCAA DI in rebounding, with 12.5 boards a game. Jackson also leads Hawai`i with 12.2 points per game and the frosh forward has made a huge impact for the 'Bows this year, tallying nine double-doubles. She has done the job both on the offensive and defensive glass, grabbing 115 offensive and 134 defensive boards. In conference games, she is averaging a staggering 13.3 rebounds per game along with 9.6 points per game.

Senior point guard Keisha Kanekoa is having a solid season. She is second on the team with 11.6 points per game and leads UH with 74 assists, a .793 free-throw percentage, and 33 steals. Megan Tinnin is fourth on the squad, averaging 8.6 points per game. She also leads UH with 37 3-pointers made and 32 steals. She has helped to crash the boards contributing 4.2 rebounds per game, while freshman Shawna-Lei Kuehu has started all 22 games and is currently is averaging 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists in 28.2 minutes per game.

IDAHO VS. HAWAI'I
The Idaho vs. Hawai'i game on Saturday, Feb. 5 is UH's “Pink Zone” game to promote breast cancer awareness as a part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The 'Bows will be wearing pink and encourage fans to do so as well. Preceeding the game against the Vandals, the Rainbow Wahine Alumnae will take the court in their annual Alumnae Game starting at 5:00 pm. This year, 35 alumnae are expected to participate including two-time New Zealand Olympian, Tania Brunton Tupu.

Opponent: Idaho is in a two-way tie for third in the WAC with a 5-3 record. The Vandals are on a two-game win streak with wins at home over New Mexico State and San Jose State.
Coaches: Hawai'i head coach Dana Takahara-Dias is in her second season at UH (16-35). Idaho head coach, Jon Newlee (who was an assistant for the Rainbow Wahine from 1999-2002) is in his third season as a head coach and has a 35-43 record.
Series Information: Hawai'i holds a 9-4 lead over Idaho. Most recently, the Vandals pulled away from the 'Bows in Moscow, to win 72-48 in UH's first WAC road game of the year. Last season, UH defeated the Vandals in Honolulu, 62-52 (Jan. 13) but fell in Moscow, 59-74 (Feb. 13)
