HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i defeated Texas today, 5-4, in a 15-inning marathon. David Peterson scored the gamewinner, scampering home from third base on a wild pitch. The Rainbows improve to 3-3 while the Longhorns fall to 4-3.
There were 3,943 tickets issued for the contest and a turnstile count of 2,834.
Peterson and Sean Montplaiser each had three hits to lead the 'Bows, with Peterson adding three runs scored. Zack Swasey recorded two hits and three RBI, and Jeffrey Van Doornum added two hits.
Zach Gallagher (1-0) earned the win for UH, pitching three complete scoreless innings. Corey Knebel (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Texas, allowing one earned run in three and two-thirds innings.
Brandon Loy and Cohl Wall both recorded three hits to lead Texas.
The game, which was the longest for UH since 2008, appeared to be headed for a pitchers duel as starters Connor Little (UH) and Cole Green (UT) both pitched shutout ball through six innings. Both teams notched their first runs in the seventh inning but the Longhorns appeared to break the game wide open with three runs in the eighth inning. Kevin Lussen's (1-3, 2 RBI) two-RBI base hit helped UT build a 4-1 lead.
The bottom half of the eighth inning saw UH load the bases on a walk and a hits batsman. Swasey cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to tie the game.
The game went scoreless until the bottom of the 15th inning. Peterson singled up the middle, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Blake (0-3, 1 R), then to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on Knebel's first pitch to Matt Harrison (0-1).
The 'Bows and Longhorns conclude their series tomorrow, February 27. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
