Louisiana Tech Pulls Away from Hawai`i, 76-50

Box Score

RUSTON, La.—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (9-17, 3-10 WAC) battled hard in the first half but eventually, conference-leading Louisiana Tech (19-5, 11-0 WAC) proved to be too strong and pulled away, 76-50. Freshman Kamilah Jackson led Hawai`i with her 11th double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds at the Thomas Assembly Center on Thursday night.

The Rainbow Wahine worked hard to keep the game close in the first half, closing with a 15-to-5 run on tough defense and clutch shooting to cut their deficit to 25-30 at the break. But in the second half, Louisiana Tech started to pull away, outscoring the 'Bows 46-25 to win by 26 points. In the game, the Lady Techsters made the Rainbow Wahine pay for their 28 turnovers, which translated into 34 Lady Techster points. LaTech also outscored UH in the paint 36-to-26 and tallied 14 fast break points to zero for the 'Bows. Hawai`i did tie Louisiana Tech with 41 rebounds a piece as well as in bench points at 19 for each team.

Jackson shot 4-of-7 from the floor and was 4-of-6 at the free-throw line. She also had an assist and a block in 31 minutes.

Fellow freshman Shawna-Lei Kuehu was second on the team with nine points with five rebounds, an assist and a steal, while freshman Sydney Haydel sunk seven points on 2-of-5 shooting and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Haydel also had an assist and a steal in the game.

After clamping down on reigning WAC Player of the Week and the conference's leading scorer, Adrienne Johnson in the first half (three points, three rebounds, one steal), Johnson responded in the second half with 18 points in the second half to hit her season average of 22 points. She went 6-of-13 from the floor and was 10-of-14 from the free throw line.

Hawai`i now concludes their season with a three-game homestand, beginning on Feb. 24 against San Jose State at 5:00 pm.
