Women's Hoops Heads To Louisiana Tech

Game Notes

RUSTON, La.—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (9-16, 3-9 WAC) concludes its three-game road trip at Louisiana Tech (18-5, 10-0 WAC). The 'Bows have won three of their last four games to start the second round of the Western Athletic Conference and hope to take their momentum into Ruston, La. to face the Lady Techsters, who are undefeated in conference, on Thurs., Feb. 17 at 7:00 pm in the Thomas Assembly Center. 

In their last game, Hawai`i held off New Mexico State in Las Cruces for a 57-52 win which snapped an 18-game WAC road losing streak and a 19-game DI road losing skid. Hawai`i's last WAC road “W” was at Utah State on Jan. 30, 2009. The 'Bows avenged their 58-74 loss to NMSU in Honolulu on Jan. 6 to start the conference season. Hawai`i out-rebounded the Aggies 52-32 and was dominant in the paint, outscoring NMSU 24-16.

In the win, freshman forward Kamilah Jackson scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season, breaking the former freshman double-double record of nine, held by UH's most decorated player, Judy Mosely.

Jackson, continues to lead Hawai'i with 11.9 rebounds per game and remains amongst the nation's elite on the boards. Jackson also remains at the top of the team averaging 11.8 points per game while grabbing 125 offensive and 149 defensive boards for a total of 274 rebounds as a rookie. She has almost double the amount of rebounds as the next Rainbow Wahine (Arbuckle's 139). In conference games, she is also averaging 11.9 rebounds per game along with 9.5 points per game.

Senior point guard Keisha Kanekoa is also having a solid season. She is second on the team with 11.2 points per game and leads UH with 83 assists, a .789 free-throw percentage, and has 33 steals. Kanekoa scored 10 points in UH's win at NMSU and in the process passed Ayesha Brooks for 10th all-time in the UH scoring record book. Brooks scored 1,131 in her four years from 1987-90. Kanekoa currently has 1,139 points and is just 34 points behind Kaui Wakita's 1,173 points to move into ninth all-time in the UH record book. Wakita starred for Hawai`i from 1991-94.

Freshman Shawna-Lei Kuehu has steadily been moving up the team stats and has come on strong to currently lead UH in conference games with 125 points and 10.4 points per game. She also leads the 'Bows with 15 blocks and 23 steals in the WAC and is second on the team with 5.0 rebounds and an .828 free-throw percentage. Overall, she is third on the team with 9.3 points per game and a team-high 41 steals. Kuehu is second on the team with 26 blocks, 62 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.

Megan Tinnin is fourth on the squad, averaging 9.0 points per game. She also leads UH with 41 3-pointers made and Tinnin has 37 steals. She has helped to crash the boards contributing 4.0 rebounds per game

Coaches: Hawai'i head coach Dana Takahara-Dias is in her second season at UH (19-36). Louisiana Tech's head coach, Teresa Weatherspoon is in her third season and has a 33-11 record.
Series Information: Louisiana Tech has dominated the series, owning a 21-3 advantage over UH. Earlier this season, Hawai`i fell at home in overtime to the Lady Techsters on Jan. 8, 69-74. The 'Bows had a chance to beat Louisiana Tech with two Kamilah Jackson at the line shooting two with a couple ticks left on the clock. She was able to sink one-of-two to force overtime, where La Tech eventually pulled away for the victory. Last season the Lady Techsters defeated the 'Bows 75-62 in Ruston, La. (Jan. 21, 2010), then came to Honolulu where UH came up short, 71-79 (Feb. 20, 2010)
