HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team saw its postseason hopes dashed by old rival Brigham Young, 41-20, Saturday in a nationally televised game on ESPN2.

Trailing 13-10 at the half, the Cougars (9-3) scored 34 unanswered points, including 28 in the third quarter, to put the game out of reach. The Warriors only managed 89 yards of total offense in the second half.

With the loss, the Warriors (6-7) failed to reach the seven wins necessary to qualify for the hometown Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. UH finished the season with a losing record for the second time in three seasons and for just the third time in the past 11 years.

The game marked the first meeting between the old Western Athletic Conference rivals in nine years. In fact, former Warrior Chad Owens, who set an NCAA return record in UH's win over the Cougars in 2001, introduced the team during the pre-game festivities. Twenty-six UH seniors played their final home game and were honored during the traditional Senior Walk following the contest.

Making his second consecutive start for the Warriors was sophomore quarterback David Graves, who finished 13-of-23 for 186 yards and one touchdown. Senior Shane Austin replaced Graves late in the third quarter and completed 12-of-24 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.

BYU quarterback Riley Nelson threw for a career-high 363 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to receiver Ross Apo. The other was a 38-yard one-handed catch by Cody Hoffman, after Nelson appeared to be sacked.

Down 13-10 at the half, BYU took the second half kickoff and put together a nine-play, 72-yard drive capped by Nelson's second touchdown pass to Apo on a 12-yard catch and run. On UH's ensuing possession, running back Joey Iosefa fumbled and it was recovered by BYU's Joe Sampson who returned it 26 yards for a touchdown and a 24-13 Cougar lead.

After the Cougars forced a three-and-out by the Warriors, Nelson went to work again, converting a 40-yard pass to Marcus Matthews to the UH 1-yard one. Bryan Kariya scored on the next play giving BYU a 31-13 lead.

Another three-and-out by the Warriors led to the Cougars' final score of the third quarter, a one-handed catch from Justin Sorenson after Nelson appeared to be sacked.

UH finally ended the drought with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Austin to Jeremiah Ostrowki midway through the fourth quarter. Up until that drive, the Warriors had only 1 yard of total offense through five possessions.

Hawai'i got on the scoreboard first in the opening period with a 1-yard touchdown run by Graves. Kenton Chun's point after attempt was wide right.

After a scoreless first period, BYU put together a 10-play drive to start the second quarter. Nelson found Apo, who reached over an out-stretched Tank Hopkins for the 22-yard score.

After a UH punt, the Cougars again mounted a drive but the Warriors dodged a bullet when Justin Sorenson's 38-yard field goal hit the left upright and bounced away.

On the very next play, Graves found Trevor Davis on an inside screen and the freshman did the rest, covering 79 yards for the score. The reception was the longest play from scrimmage for the Warriors this season.

With just over three minutes to play in the half, the Cougars closed out the half with a 33-yard field goal by Sorenson to pull within 13-10.
