HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball (1-5) battled hard in the first half, but No. 22 Virginia (5-1) pulled away from UH to win, 60-43. Sophomore forward Kamilah Jackson led all scorers with 21 points while sophomore guard Shawna-Lei Kuehu grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in the loss on the second day of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Saturday.

Jackson ended up two rebounds shy of notching her 15th double-double of her career, finishing with eight boards. She went 5-of-10 from the floor and a perfect 11-for-11 in free-throws. Her 21 points is the most by any UH player this season and tied for the third-most points scored in her young career.

Kuehu passed her previous career-high of 12 rebounds set last season against Oregon State (Nov. 21, 2010), corralling two offensive and 11 defensive boards. But, she struggled offensively, posting just one point on 0-of-5 shooting. She recorded had an assist, a block and two steals, but also committed a game-high nine turnovers—six coming in the second half.

Also having a strong outing was senior center, Rebecca Dew, who was a solid force in the middle, grabbing eight rebounds and scoring a season-high 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting.

The Rainbow Wahine battled hard in the first half, and trailed the Cavaliers by just ten points, 31-21, at the break. UH kept the Cavaliers in their sights, never letting them get a lead over 10 points during the first 20 minutes of action. Jackson led the UH with eight points while Kuehu grabbed nine boards in the first half.

But in the second half, UVa closed out the game by wearing the Rainbow Wahine down, forcing 13 turnovers in the last 20 minutes—seven in the last 12 minutes of the game. Virginia capitalized on UH's miscues, converting them into 25 points. UH conversely was able to score just three points off of Virginia's 12 total turnovers. In the middle of the period, UVa went on a 10-2 run that pushed their lead to 17 points and UH was never quite able to recover its bearings.

As a team, however, collectively the 'Bows fought hard in the paint to win the rebounding battle, 42-to-36. UH also did well tying the Virginia squad 20-to-20 in points in the paint. Hawai`i was also able to put-back 14 second-chance points to UVa's six points.

Hawai`i closes its second tournament of the season against No. 24 Texas (4-1) on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine are 0-2 in the tourney, while the Longhorns are 2-0. The first game of the day features No. 22 Virginia vs. California.
