Women’s Soccer Blows By Nevada, 5-0

Box Score

WAIPAHU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team won its second straight match with a dominating 5-0 victory over Nevada Sunday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. With the win, UH (3-8) is off to its first 2-0 start in Western Athletic Conference play since 2007.

The five-goal margin was also UH's biggest WAC win since a 7-0 rout of Idaho, also in 2007, the last season the Rainbow Wahine won the league championship. UH now sits atop the league standings after the first weekend as the only 2-0 team.

Hawai'i took a 2-0 lead into halftime and tacked on three more goals in the second to cruise to victory. Meanwhile, junior goalkeeper Kanani Taaca put together a clean sheet as the Rainbow Wahine posted its fist shutout of the season.

Brittani Lum, Karli Look and Krystal Pascua got in the scoring column, while UH also benefitted from two Nevada (2-11, 0-1 WAC) own goals. The Rainbow Wahine fired 12 shots, with 11 on goal.

Lum got UH on the board first in the 22nd minute when she fired a rocket of a free kick from the top of the penalty box that deflected off a Wolf Pack defender and into the back of the net. It was her team-high fifth goal of the season and the second straight match in which she scored.

The Rainbow Wahine got another goal right before the half when UH created an opportunity right at the mouth of the opposing goal, causing a Nevada player to inadvertently knock the ball in.  Look scored her first goal of the season off a Rachel Domingo corner kick in the 48th minute, while Pascua made it 4-0 in the 60th minute with her second goal of the year. Another Nevada own goal in the 66th minute completed the scoring as UH won back-to-back matches for the first time since 2009.

UH will now play its first WAC road match of the year when it plays at Idaho on Friday, Oct. 7. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. PT (1:00 p.m. HT).
