HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team suffered a tight 4-3 loss to No. 73 Brigham Young Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 2-2 on the season.
UH got off to a strong start but could not hold BYU (3-0) at bay as the Cougars won four of six singles matches to clinch the win.
The Rainbow Wahine started the day by taking the doubles point with wins on two of three courts. The pair of
Barbara Pinterova and
Katarina Poljakova set the tone by defeating the No. 53 pair of Megan Price and Callie Craig 8-5. Meanwhile, the pair of
Alyssa Nafarrete and
Magdalena Ploch took down Elle Carney and Elizaveta Ezhova, 8-2, on the No. 2 court.
Things got really competitive in singles action with half of the matches going into three sets. The Cougars got the better of UH on two of those matches to swing the match to their favor. The UH wins came courtesy of Pinterova on the No. 1 court and Poljakova on the No. 3 court. Pinterova won her third straight singles match this week with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Price. Meanwhile, Poljakova remained unbeaten this spring (4-0) after outlasting Craig 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 10-7.
The Rainbow Wahine will play its next four matches on the road in California beginning with a contest at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 5. First serve is at 11:00 a.m. PT.
