LOGAN, Utah—The University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (6-14, 0-8 WAC) battled hard, but could not come up with that elusive road win, falling instead at Utah State (9-10, 3-3 WAC), 52-41. Senior guard
Keisha Kanekoa led UH with 15 points while
Julita Bungaite tied a career-high with 12 rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine led almost the entire first half, taking a 21-17 lead into the break. UH scored on 10-of-20 shots, dominating in the paint, 14-4 over the Aggies. The 'Bows built as big a lead as 12 points with 6:50 left in the first half before the Aggies started to chip away to close the gap just before the half.
But after shooting 50% from the floor in the first half, the 'Bows struggled to score in the second half. Utah State held UH to just 19.2 field goal percentage (5-of-26). Utah State outscored UH 35-20 in the second half, and switched roles with Hawai`i, outscoring the 'Bows 20-6 in the key. Turnovers continue to haunt Hawai`i as the Aggies were able to post 26 points off of UH's 20 turnovers, while the 'Bows could only convert USU's nine turnovers into four points.
Kanekoa went 6-of-15 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds with an assist and a steal. Three players were tied with six points—Bungaite tallied her six points along with her 12 boards with a block.
Allie Patterson and
Rebecca Dew were the other players with six points and both had two rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine were without the services of the team's top two rebounders—freshman forward,
Kamilah Jackson and junior forward,
Breanna Arbuckle. Both were suspended for one game for violating team rules. Jackson leads UH the nation with 13.1 rebounds per game and has a team-high 13.0 points per game. Arbuckle is tied for the team lead with 22 blocked shots, second on the team with 5.7 rebounds, and tied for fourth on the team with 8.4 points per game.
Utah State was led by Ashlee Brown's game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds, scoring on 9-of-15 shots.
Hawai`i returns home now for a three-game homestand, starting on Monday, Jan. 31 at 7:00 pm against Nevada.
