Warriors Host Defending Champion Stanford For Two-Match Series

Opposite Jonas Umlauft earned all-tournament team honors in last week's Outrigger Invitational
Match Notes

HONOLULU – Following a disappointing showing in last week's Outrigger Hotels Invitational, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will try to regroup by hosting defending national champion Stanford for a two-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series Friday, Jan. 21 and Sunday, Jan. 23. Match times are 7:00 p.m. on Friday and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The 13th-ranked Warriors (0-3, 0-0 MPSF) are coming off three straight losses in the Outrigger to Ball State, Penn State, and UCLA. UH had never finished 0-3 in the 17-year history of the tournament. Opposite Jonas Umlauft totaled 41 kills and hit .302 in two matches against BSU and PSU but did not play against the Bruins due to illness.

The second-ranked Cardinal (3-0, 2-0) swept a two-match home series against Brigham Young at Maples Pavilion last week including a thriller on the opening night in which Stanford pulled out the fifth set 17-15. Brad Lawson tallied match-highs of 20 kills (.333) in the first match and 19 kills (.467) and three aces in the second match, while Spencer McLachlin hit .381 for the series (31-7-63).

Stanford features seven players from Hawai'i high schools including Lawson ('Iolani), McLachlin (Punahou), and All-American libero Erik Shoji (Punahou), the youngest son of UH head women's volleyball coach Dave Shoji. Lawson was the MPSF's Player of the Year in 2010 as well as a first-team AVCA All-American.

For the second straight year, Hawai'i opens conference play against the Cardinal. Stanford swept both matches in a two-match series at Maples Pavilion last season. The Cardinal also eliminated the Warriors from the MPSF Tournament in a semifinal at Maples Pavilion.

UH holds a slight 34-31 advantage in the all-time series, however, the Cardinal have won the last seven meetings dating back to 2008.
