No. 5 Warriors Host 17th Outrigger Hotels Invitational This Week

Match Notes

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team opens the 2011 season by hosting the 17th Outrigger Hotels Invitational, Thursday, Jan. 13 through Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Outrigger Hotels Invitational is considered the premiere early-season tournament in the country with No. 8 UCLA, No. 10 Penn State, and No. 14 Ball State joining host and fifth-ranked Hawai'i.

The round-robin tournament features matches at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. each day with the Warriors playing the featured match each night.

UH and Penn State have participated in the 16 previous Outrigger Hotels Invitationals. The Warriors own six tournament titles and are the defnding champions, while the Nittany Lions have two titles to their credit. UCLA has the second most titles in tournament history (5) and have competed in 10 previous Invitationals. Ball State will be making its fourth Outrigger appearance.

This year signals a new rule change in men's volleyball. Sets 1-4 will now be played to 25 instead of 30 with the fifth set to 15. A team must have at least a two-point advantage for the set to end.

The Warriors (19-10 in 2010) return four starters from a team that advanced to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament semifinals and finished No. 4 nationally a year ago. Head coach Charlie Wade welcomes back AVCA Newcomer of the Year Jonas Umlauft and second-team All-American Joshua Walker.

Penn State (24-8 in 2010) finished national runner-up last season after falling to Stanford in the NCAA Championship match. UCLA (2-1) placed third in the season-opening Gaucho Invitational while Ball State (1-0) opened its season with a win over Lindenwood last week.
