HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (6-7) lost to UNLV (7-7), 63-48 in the final game of the 2010 Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Three Hawai`i players scored in double-digits, led by senior
Keisha Kanekoa who posted team-highs with 12 points and three assists.
The game was tight through the first three-quarters of the game, with the game see-sawing with 12 lead changes between UH and UNLV. UH actually took a 28-27 lead into halftime. But the Lady Rebels pulled away in the second half by scoring 36 points while holding the 'Bows to 20. UH fought back to take a one point lead with 8:58 left in the game, but UNLV pushed ahead and didn't look back, going on a 20-6 run to end the half and put the game away. UNLV scored 16 points off of Hawai`i's 16 turnovers and had a decisive advantage in bench production, outscoring UH 24-2.
Kanekoa was 6-of-14 from the floor with five rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
Breanna Arbuckle and
Megan Tinnin both added 10 points a piece. Arbuckle also secured eight rebounds—five defensive—along with an assist and a block. Tinnin sunk UH's only two 3-pointers while contributing two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Kamilah Jackson struggled to find her groove, but still was able to fight for eight points and eight boards with an assist and two steals.
UNLV and `Iolani alum
Jamie Smith played in front of her hometown fans and led all scorers with 15 points while Ta'Nitra Byrd added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Hawai`i has now completed their non-conference portion of their schedule. The will open their Western Athletic Conference season on Jan. 6 against New Mexico State at 5:00 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's basketball game to follow.
