HONOLULU—The 14th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (7-0) captured the 2010 Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown with a 91-57 win over Hawai`i (4-2). The 'Bows were led by
Shawna-Lei Kuehu who scored a career-high 16 points and
Kamilah Jackson tallied her third-straight double-double on Sunday in front of a crowd of 999 in the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Tar Heels started the game on an 8-0 run and never looked back as they overwhelmed Hawai`i in almost every phase of the game. The 'Bows were out-rebounded 48-31, gave up 28 second chance points to just six for UH and in the paint, where UNC had a distinct height advantage, North Carolina scored 42 points to Hawai`i's 28.
Kuehu filled her line in the score book. Along with her team-high 16 points, Kuehu grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists, had two blocks and a steal.
Jackson, a freshman from Oakland, Calif., continues to perform well for Hawai`i. She leads UH averaging 9.8 rebounds per game and has secured 59 total boards, compared to the next Rainbow Wahine, Kuehu, who has 36. Seven of Jackson's 10 rebounds tonight were defensive.
The Rainbow Wahine completed their eight-game home stand (including two exhibition games) to start the season and now head to Portland, Ore. for their first road trip of the season. Hawai`i will take on Portland State on Thursday, Dec. 2 and Portland on Saturday, Dec. 4.
