RUSTON, La. – The University of Hawai'i Warrior football team suffered its second straight road defeat with a 27-6 loss to Louisiana Tech in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams Wednesday night at Joe Alliet Stadium. UH dropped to 2-2 on the year and 0-1 in the WAC.
After clinging to a 10-6 halftime lead, the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 WAC) pulled away in the second half, out-scoring the Warriors, 17-0. The Bulldogs won the game with power rushing, gaining a season-high 352 yards. Daniel Porter finished with 25 carries for a season-high 160 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, UH's big-play offense was held in check. The Warriors did put together a pair of sustained drives in the first half, but were held to field goals on both occasions. Quarterback
Greg Alexander finished with a season-low 199 yards before being knocked out of the game late in the third quarter. UH also surrendered a season-high seven sacks.
The Warriors got off to a rough start in the second half when a tipped passed was intercepted by Kwame Jordan on UH's first play from scrimmage. The Bulldogs capitalized moments later when Porter scored his second touchdown of the night for a 17-6 La Tech lead early in the third quarter. The Bulldogs padded their lead to 24-6 entering the final quarter following a Myke Compton 6-yard run.
Hawai'i's only points came on a pair of
Scott Enos field goals in the first half. The Warriors ultimately failed to score a touchdown for the first time since a loss at Boise State in 2004, a span of some 63 games. UH looked to score late in the fourth quarter but
Greg Salas fumbled the ball into the endzone, punctuating a frustrating night for the Warriors who were playing the final of three straight road games in September.
Salas led the Warriors with six catch for 122 yards, his fourth 100-yard game this season. Backup quarterback
Bryant Moniz completed 5-of-11 passes for 109 yards in a quarter of action, after filling in for Alexander.
Blaze Soares led the UH defense with 12 tackles.
UH will play its first home game in more than a month when it hosts Fresno State on Saturday, Oct. 10. Kickoff is set for 5:05 p.m. HT.
